Icelandic Chocolate Faces Backlash

A wave of enthusiasm for Dubai-inspired chocolate has reached the United Kingdom, and now Iceland supermarkets have entered the fray. The retailer is offering the Bolci Dubai Chocolate with Pistachio Kadayif Filled Milk Chocolate, a 100g bar priced at £5.

According to Iceland’s description, the chocolate boasts “delicate, aromatic pistachio cream” that complements the chocolate beautifully, creating an undeniably appealing flavor profile. They highlight Bolci’s commitment to quality ingredients and promise “the authentic taste of Dubai.” The inclusion of Kadayif—a crispy thread dough—is intended to add a unique textural element.

The introduction hasn’t been met with universal acclaim. Reactions online have been mixed, ranging from disappointment to skepticism:

  • “It’s a very strange taste of chocolate. It’s very disappointing.”
  • “Anyone with any sense is not going to throw £5 away to try and probably not like some weird-looking, green chocolate. Anyone who does has more money than sense.”

However, there have been positive responses as well:

  • “I’ve tried this, it’s lovely.”

Beyond the taste itself, some consumers question the broader trend. Several observers believe the Dubai chocolate craze is fleeting.

  • “What is this obsession with Dubai and everything in it? It’s very strange; I think I will stick to a KitKat.”
  • “I don’t think any of these Dubai bars are any good. It’s just another craze.”
  • “Available everywhere. I’m not sure why there’s an obsession with an expensive small bar.”

Recent Developments: Supermarkets continue to adapt to the demand for seasonal treats.

  • Aldi has released ‘irresistible’ savoury Easter options, starting from 99p.
  • Lidl is offering a range of ‘moreish’ Easter desserts while supplies last.
  • Morrisons has launched a limited-time breakfast deal with free food at its cafes.

To manage the unprecedented demand and ensure fair access, several supermarkets have implemented purchase limits on Dubai chocolate bars.

Both Lidl and Waitrose are restricting purchases to two bars per customer. Waitrose recently announced the arrival of the Lindt Dubai Chocolate bar (£10), noting its availability in “selected stores.” In response to enthusiastic inquiries, Waitrose advised customers to call ahead to confirm stock before visiting.
