An impressive number of delegations have already confirmed their participation – approximately 130 in total – including roughly 50 heads of state and a minimum of ten other prominent world leaders. This underscores the widespread respect and influence Pope Francis commanded on the global stage.
Notable Attendees:
- United States: Former President Joe Biden is scheduled to attend, according to Italian news sources. Current US President Donald Trump will also be present alongside his wife, Melania Trump, a Roman Catholic, despite periods of disagreement between the two men. He expressed his intention to attend, stating, “Look forward to being there!”
- United Kingdom: Prince William, heir to the throne, will represent the United Kingdom, echoing the role played by King Charles III (then Prince Charles) at Pope John Paul II’s funeral in 2005. Prime Minister Kier Starmer is also expected to attend; however, Prince William’s family will not accompany him.
- Italy: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has postponed travel plans to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to ensure her presence at the papal funeral. In a heartfelt social media tribute, she reflected on “the privilege of enjoying his friendship, his advice, his teachings.”
- Argentina: President Javier Milei, hailing from Pope Francis’s homeland, will journey to Rome despite past criticisms leveled against the pontiff. Milei acknowledged the significance of their encounter in a statement, saying, “Despite differences that seem minor today, having been able to know him in his goodness and wisdom was a true honor for me.”
- Ireland: Both President Michael Higgins and Prime Minister Martin will represent Ireland at the funeral, signifying the strong Catholic heritage of the nation.
- Ukraine: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed his attendance, offering thanks for the Pope’s prayers for peace in Ukraine. He stated, “Our state will be represented in Rome at the farewell ceremony this coming Saturday.” Zelenskyy had previously met with the Pope in October 2023.
- European Union: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is slated to attend, marking a rare public appearance alongside Donald Trump since he assumed office.
While many world leaders will pay their respects, several key figures will be absent. Notably, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, as well as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – representing nations that have faced criticism from the Pope regarding human rights concerns or geopolitical tensions – are not expected to attend.
