Achieving a youthful and vibrant complexion often involves makeup, not just for color but also to highlight desirable features and soften the appearance of imperfections.
According to beauty experts, there’s one crucial step that should never be skipped before applying any makeup: primer. Nadia Lopel, founder of iBEAUTY CODE Beauty Studio and Academy and a lash specialist, emphasizes its importance in creating a flawless base for makeup application.
“The secret to looking younger through makeup lies not only in the products you choose but also in the technique itself,” she stated. “A hydrating primer is always step one – it’s about preparing your skin like an artist prepares a canvas.”
Lopel explains that priming creates a smooth surface, plumping the skin and minimizing the visibility of fine lines and dry patches. Hydrated skin naturally appears smoother, lessening the appearance of wrinkles.
Following primer, selecting the right foundation is key. For those seeking an anti-aging effect, Lopel advises against heavy or matte foundations.
“Thick, matte, high-coverage products tend to settle into lines and accentuate texture,” she explained. “Instead, opt for something with light to medium coverage and a dewy finish. This creates a healthy, radiant look that mimics youthful skin.”
Concealer application also requires careful consideration. Similar to foundation, overly thick concealers can be counterproductive.
“When concealing the eye area, avoid anything heavy or drying,” Lopel recommends. “A lighter, illuminating concealer brightens the under-eye area without creasing. Applying a small amount and blending with a slightly dampened sponge provides the most natural result.”
This advice aligns with observations from other skincare professionals. Dr. Vanita Rattan suggests having multiple concealers on hand to address different concerns.
“A lightweight concealer, rich in ingredients like ceramides and peptides, can effectively hydrate and brighten the delicate skin under the eyes,” she noted, “whereas a full-coverage concealer is better suited for concealing blemishes.”
Dr. Rattan further explained that as we age, collagen production declines, leading to thinner, drier skin around the eyes—making it more susceptible to fine lines and dehydration.
- Step 1: Hydrating Primer – Prepares the skin for flawless makeup application.
- Foundation: Choose a light to medium coverage with a dewy finish.
- Concealer: Use a lightweight, illuminating formula under the eyes and a full-coverage product for blemishes.
Ultimately, creating a youthful look through makeup is about strategic product selection and skillful application – starting with that essential primer layer.
