As we mature, a phenomenon known as crepey skin – characterized by its delicate, paper-thin texture and fine lines – becomes increasingly common. While this is a natural part of the ageing process, experts assert that proactive measures can significantly delay its appearance.
According to Valerie Aparovich, a biochemist and certified cosmetologist-esthetician at OnSkin, the underlying cause lies in the inevitable structural and hormonal shifts that accompany age. “The body’s natural production of collagen and elastic fibres gradually slows down, which subsequently impairs the skin’s ability to regenerate,” she explained.
This decline leads to a loss of firmness and elasticity, resulting in skin that feels thinner, more lax, and prone to wrinkling and sagging. A key contributor is the reduction in levels of naturally occurring substances like ceramides and hyaluronic acid, which compromise the skin’s ability to retain moisture.
However, Aparovich emphasized that environmental factors play a crucial role. “UV rays from sun exposure and tanning beds trigger photoaging, dramatically accelerating the visible signs of ageing – including crepey skin.” Beyond sunlight, pollution also contributes by increasing oxidative stress and weakening the skin’s protective antioxidant defenses.
Lifestyle choices are equally important. Aparovich noted that “Poor habits such as an unhealthy diet, insufficient sleep, smoking, alcohol consumption, and chronic stress all negatively impact skin’s youthful appearance.”
Caroline Livingstone, founder of BU Aesthetics, concurred with this assessment, adding that fluctuations in weight can also be a contributing factor often overlooked. “Crepey skin, marked by its thin and wrinkled texture, is primarily driven by the ageing process, sun damage, and a reduction in collagen and elastin production,” she stated.
Preventing Crepey Skin: A Proactive Approach
Experts agree that prevention is paramount. A personalized skincare routine tailored to individual skin types forms the first line of defense.
Here are key elements for a preventative strategy:
- Targeted Ingredients: Incorporate products containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, collagen, ceramides, and plant-derived oils.
- Antioxidant Power: Prioritize antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, niacinamide, and coenzyme Q10 to combat free radical damage.
- Hydration is Key: Consistent moisturizing both internally and externally is essential.
Aparovich explained the importance of internal hydration. “Dryness, regardless of the cause, can contribute to crepey skin. Maintaining adequate hydration from within is crucial.” Humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid draw moisture into the epidermis, while emollients—such as plant oils (karité shea butter, canola, almond, coconut)—help seal in that moisture.
Sun Protection: The Non-Negotiable Factor
Aparovich strongly emphasized the indispensable role of sun protection. “The best overall solution is a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF rating of 50 or higher.” Complementing this, seeking shade during peak hours and wearing protective clothing adds further defense.
Combining these strategies—a disciplined skincare routine, healthy lifestyle choices, and diligent sun protection—can significantly improve skin health and delay the onset of crepey skin. Aparovich concluded that “Vitamins C, E, and A are fortifying antioxidants that help protect cells from free radical damage.”
