Virgin Media rewards loyal customers

Long-time broadband customers of Virgin Media may soon receive a complimentary upgrade to the latest generation of their Wi-Fi router. The initiative is being rolled out to those still utilizing older models, specifically Hub 1, Hub 2, and Hub 2 AC routers.

Why the Upgrade?

The primary driver for this upgrade isn’t just about improved performance but crucial security. Older Virgin Media routers no longer receive essential software updates and bug fixes, leaving networks vulnerable to hacking attempts and malicious code.

This shift is directly linked to a new UK government regulation requiring all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to bolster customer protection against cyber threats. As the first nation globally to enact such laws, the UK now mandates that manufacturers protect devices with internet connectivity – from smartphones and game consoles to broadband routers – from exploitation.

These new regulations also address common security failings. Manufacturers are prohibited from using easily guessable default passwords like “admin” or “12345,” and users will be prompted to change them upon initial setup if a standard password is detected.

The urgency of this matter was underscored by past events, such as the 2016 Mirai attack that compromised approximately 300,000 smart devices due to weak security features. This resulted in widespread internet outages across the US East Coast and subsequent disruptions impacting UK banks like Lloyds and RBS.

Beyond Security: Performance Boosts

  • The upgraded Virgin Media Hub 4 boasts two additional wireless antennas compared to its predecessor, which can improve performance and stability, especially in homes with multiple connected devices or areas experiencing poor signal strength.
  • While the Hub 4 operates on Wi-Fi 5 technology—not the newest standard—it can still offer a speed improvement for users switching from older routers, provided their devices also support Wi-Fi 5.

Alternatives and Future Technologies

Virgin Media’s flagship Hub 5 utilizes faster Wi-Fi 6 technology, and EE has taken the lead by offering full-fibre broadband packages with a Wi-Fi 7 hub as standard. Customers seeking cutting-edge wireless capabilities can also opt for standalone routers like those offered by Amazon’s eero brand, which support speeds up to 2.5 Gbps.

EE’s Offer: A Limited Time Deal

For a limited time, EE is offering three months of free full-fibre broadband with their packages starting at £32.99, unlocking the Full Fibre 150 plan and extending up to the Made For Gamers package, which includes the Wi-Fi 7 hub.

Virgin Media’s Message

Customers eligible for a free upgrade will receive communication from Virgin Media stating:

“We’re aware you’ve got one of our oldest Hubs, either a Hub 1, Hub 2 or a Hub 2 AC. Although they still work, they no longer receive security updates. The UK Government has updated the law about telecommunications networks and keeping you safe online, and we need to offer you a free Hub replacement. The good news is, our Hub 4 is more secure, faster and offers improved power consumption. There’s no need to change your current package or sign a new contract.”

If you haven’t received this communication but suspect you may be using an older router, visit virginmedia.com/hubupgrade to check your eligibility.

The UK government views these regulations as a significant step towards establishing the nation as a global standard for online safety and delivering on their pledge to grow the economy by increasing consumer confidence in product security. The initiative is part of the £2.6 billion National Cyber Strategy.
