New York State Police responded to an extraordinary situation this week when they were tasked with securing a runaway alpaca.
Westchester County Police Department reported receiving a call on Thursday morning concerning a loose llama sighted on Kisco Avenue. Initial reports indicated the animal was attempting to escape, but upon arrival, officers discovered it was, in fact, an alpaca.
“Our department routinely receives a diverse range of calls for assistance,” stated the police department via social media at 10:09 a.m. “This particular incident highlighted the need for vigilance, and while the initial description wasn’t entirely accurate, it was remarkably consistent compared to some of the more perplexing reports we handle.”
“Officers Mirko and Rodriguez swiftly apprehended the alpaca after it had escaped from a trailer situated near Hotel MTK on Pat Reilly Way,” the department announced. “The animal then proceeded along Kisco Avenue, ultimately arriving close to the Land Rover dealership – a humorous observation suggesting perhaps a desire for a more luxurious vehicle.”
“We speculate that this alpaca was present at a children’s birthday celebration,” the police added playfully. “It seems like everything went according to plan.”
The animal was subsequently returned to its owner following the successful capture.
Alpacas, native to the Andean Mountains of South America, are commonly found at petting zoos and children’s events. Despite sharing a close relationship with llamas – both belonging to the camel family – alpacas represent a distinct species.
