Morrisons has initiated a product withdrawal for its premium Cumberland sausages due to the potential presence of blue plastic fragments.
The affected item is “The Best 6 Thick Cumberland Sausages,” and customers are strongly cautioned against consumption until further notice. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) announced this action, specifically impacting 400g packages with a “use-by” date of May 1, 2025.
As the FSA stated, “The possible presence of small pieces of blue plastic makes the product unsafe to eat.”
Morrisons is actively addressing the issue by displaying prominent notices in all stores where the sausages are sold. These notices detail the reason for the withdrawal and provide guidance for customers who may have already purchased the product.
Customers who have bought the recalled sausages are urged to return them to their nearest Morrisons location for a full refund or exchange.
The FSA releases Product Recall Information Notices to keep both consumers and local authorities informed about food safety concerns. In more critical situations, a ‘Food Alert for Action’ is issued, directing local authorities to take specific steps to protect consumer interests. Products posing a risk are either removed from shelves (“withdrawn”) or customers are asked to return them (“recalled”).
This incident follows another recent recall – in March—when Coca-Cola pulled back over 10,000 cans of soda due to similar plastic contamination.
The FDA has emphasized the potential dangers associated with foreign objects in food, stating that “hard or sharp foreign objects in food may cause traumatic injury including laceration and perforation of tissues of the mouth, tongue, throat, stomach and intestine as well as damage to the teeth and gums.” This voluntary recall was initiated by Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling, LLC, encompassing 864 cases containing twelve cans per case.
The problem with the Coca-Cola product was reported to the FDA earlier in March and reflects a concerning increase in food and beverage recalls impacting both major brands and retailers.
Individuals with concerns about either of these recalls are encouraged to contact Morrisons or Coca-Cola directly for assistance.
