## Deadline Looms: Americans Seek Alternatives as They Rush for REAL IDs
Across the nation, a surge of activity is underway as individuals scramble to secure REAL identification cards before the May 7th deadline. This requirement, mandated by federal law, stipulates that air travelers and those entering certain federal buildings must present a REAL ID or acceptable alternative. The approaching deadline has created significant demand, overwhelming many state motor vehicle bureaus and making appointment scheduling increasingly challenging.
The pressure is palpable. In New Jersey, for example, the Department of Motor Vehicles (NJDMV) website recently displayed zero available appointments for REAL ID services, prompting a swift response with the addition of new time slots to address the backlog.
Other states are implementing creative solutions. Virginia DMVs have introduced Saturday appointment events, while some California offices are extending their operating hours to accommodate the influx of applicants.
What Constitutes Acceptable Identification?
While obtaining a REAL ID is the primary goal for many, several alternatives satisfy federal requirements:
- Valid U.S. Passport or Passport Card
- Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Trusted Traveler Cards (e.g., Global Entry)
- Department of Defense IDs
- Permanent Resident Cards
- Border Crossing Cards
For those without these documents, AAA branches in six states—Florida, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Ohio, and Rhode Island—are offering REAL ID services.
“In Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York, DMV/RMV services at AAA branches are free for all AAA members,” the AAA site notes.
AAA’s website clarifies that while standard duplicate license fees may apply if not associated with a renewal, there is no additional cost for the REAL ID itself.
According to an AAA spokesperson, “AAA offers DMV services in 22 states, ranging from vehicle registrations , titling, tags, license renewals, issuing new licenses, and/or REAL ID.” While this comprehensive service isn’t available nationwide, the organization doesn’t have current plans to expand its DMV offerings.
The State Department reports that expedited passport processing currently takes two to three weeks with additional fees.
Frustration & Alternative Strategies Emerge
Social media platforms are buzzing with accounts of frustration and resourceful workarounds. Many Americans, facing appointment difficulties, are opting for passports as a viable alternative.
“The REAL ID situation in Kentucky is such a sh–show that I’m completely bypassing it and just getting a passport next week,” one user posted on X.
As another user succinctly put it: “To all the PANICANS, you do NOT need a REAL ID if you have a passport.”
Several individuals shared their experiences:
- “That’s what I did… Got the passport card in addition to my book and I just carry that.”
- “I’m in SC and it was easier getting a passport.”
- “Not everyone wants, or needs, a REAL ID. A passport or passport card (less expensive) can be used for domestic air travel and entrance to restricted federal buildings.”
One user advised, “If you need to switch and the DMV is too crazy where you are, just apply for a passport with the passport card, and you can use that instead.”
Ultimately, many are discovering that leveraging their passports—whether as a book or a less expensive card—provides a straightforward solution in navigating this evolving identification landscape.
