Snowflake name defended

'Snowflake era!' Bar defends its new name after being branded 'disgusting' online - 'It's an old wives saying!' Society

A local establishment in Stoke-on-Trent has faced considerable backlash following a recent rebranding, prompting a spirited defense from its owner.

Bloom, previously operating in Hanley, underwent renovations and transitioned into a karaoke venue. As part of this transformation, the bar adopted the name “The Strangled Cat,” a decision that ignited controversy online.

Management clarified that the moniker is intended as playful reference to less-than-stellar vocal performances often heard during karaoke nights.

However, the new name was met with significant disapproval on social media. Concerns ranged from aesthetic objections to broader ethical considerations.

  • One individual expressed dismay, stating: “Disgusting name. It immediately alienates cat and animal enthusiasts.”
  • Another commented that the name was a deterrent: “What an awful business name! I wouldn’t visit for that reason alone.”
  • A third voiced concern about the timing of the change, writing: “Considering the prevalence of animal abuse in this country, surely a more thoughtful name could have been chosen.”

The owner of Breakthrough Bars, Ryan Fanthorpe, responded to the criticism, asserting that the name’s connection to karaoke makes it appropriate and not offensive. He suggested that those expressing outrage may be overly sensitive, characterizing them as products of a “snowflake era.”

“I don’t think the strangled cat is offensive when you combine it with the karaoke,” Fanthorpe told BBC.

He further explained that the bar aimed for an atmosphere beyond simply offering drinks and sought a name reflecting a bit of edgy humor. “That isn’t necessarily the sort of people I would have thought would be commenting…”

Despite the widespread criticism, some local residents defended “The Strangled Cat.”

  • One supporter remarked: “The Strangled Cat is a fantastic name for a karaoke bar! Has humor completely vanished from society?”
  • Another added: “The strangled cat is a great name considering most people that will sing on karaoke will sound like one anyway.”

This situation highlights the challenges businesses face when attempting to create memorable branding, especially in an era of heightened sensitivity and instant online feedback.
