Prince William has arrived at the Vatican City to participate in the solemn funeral rites for Pope Francis.
The Prince of Wales, 42, was observed arriving in a dark navy suit and black tie, demonstrating his respect as he approached the late pontiff’s resting place. He is among numerous international dignitaries, including other members of royal families, attending the service within St. Peter’s Basilica today.
Pope Francis, the Argentinian head of the Catholic Church, passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88, prompting widespread mourning amongst Roman Catholics globally.
As heir apparent to the Church of England, Prince William was positioned in the second row alongside other non-Catholic royals. He shared this space with Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway.
Catholic royalty occupied the front rows of the Basilica, offering their condolences to the departed Pope. This group included:
- Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco
- King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain
- Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg
King Charles III, who had a personal meeting with the Pope shortly before his death, swiftly released an official statement expressing his deep sorrow.
“My wife and I have heavy hearts as we pay tribute to Pope Francis’s compassion and tireless dedication to people of faith,” His Majesty stated.
“We were most deeply saddened by the news of his passing; however, our grief is somewhat lessened knowing he was able to share an Easter greeting with the Church and the world he served so faithfully throughout his life and ministry.”
The King further emphasized Pope Francis’s legacy, adding: “His Holiness will be remembered for his compassion, concern for the unity of the Church, and unwavering commitment to shared causes benefiting all people of faith and those who strive for good. His conviction that environmental stewardship is an integral aspect of spiritual belief resonated with countless individuals worldwide.
“Through his actions and dedication to both humanity and our planet, he profoundly impacted so many lives. The Queen and I fondly recall our encounters with him over the years and were deeply touched by our recent visit.”
Concluding his statement, King Charles conveyed heartfelt condolences: “We extend our most sincere sympathy to the Church he served with such determination, and to the countless people across the globe who, inspired by his life, will grieve the loss of this devoted follower of Jesus Christ.”
