Langer Falls Short at Masters

Bernhard Langer came incredibly close to etching his name into golfing history at this year’s Masters Tournament.

The 67-year-old veteran found himself just one stroke shy of achieving a remarkable feat: becoming the oldest player ever to make the cut at Augusta National. A par on the challenging 18th hole would have kept him at 2-over, safely below the projected cutoff and secured his place in history.

His drive landed squarely in the fairway, but his subsequent approach shot veered off course, rolling into a spectator area.

As Langer made his way to retrieve his ball, he was met with a heartfelt standing ovation from the gallery—a testament to his enduring popularity and storied career. He revealed that this year’s tournament would mark his final competitive appearance at Augusta, adding an emotional layer to the moment.

Following a delicate chip shot that landed just short of the green, Langer faced a difficult par putt. Despite a valiant effort, the ball narrowly missed finding the bottom of the cup, denying him the cut.

He tapped in for bogey and departed the 18th green to another wave of applause. Awaiting him were his family and fellow Masters champions, offering a warm farewell to a legend.

“A lot of gratitude,” Langer shared with ESPN after completing his round. “It’s been tremendous to be here 41 times.”

He emphasized the overwhelming support he received from both fans and family, describing it as “unbelievable.”

While poised for a successful cut line appearance, a costly double bogey on the 15th hole ultimately proved detrimental. Langer candidly acknowledged his struggles, referring to the closing holes as having a “horrible finish.”

Fellow competitor Fred Couples, who previously held the record for oldest player to make the cut, also faced difficulties, finishing at 4-over.

Langer’s journey began in 1982, marking his debut as Germany’s first participant in the prestigious tournament. He went on to triumph twice, securing victories in 1985 and 1993.
