Vance celebrates mother’s sobriety at White House

Vice President J.D. Vance marked a significant personal milestone this week, hosting a ceremony at the White House to celebrate his mother, Beverly Aikins, achieving ten years of sobriety.

The event, held in the Roosevelt Room on Monday, honored Aikins’ remarkable journey and resilience. Speaking about his mother, Vance reflected on a promise he made during a prior address, stating, “I remember when I gave my Republican National Committee convention speech, which was the craziest thing, and I even said during the speech that we would have your 10-year medallion ceremony at the White House.”

“Well, here we are,” Vance continued. “And you made it, and we made it. And most importantly, you’re celebrating a very, very big milestone. And I’m just very proud of you.”

Aikins’ experiences with substance abuse, particularly opioid addiction, were detailed in Vance’s acclaimed 2016 memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis.” The book offered a candid look at the challenges faced by his family and community.

The Vice President was joined at the White House celebration by his wife, Usha Vance, and their three children.
