Spieth on Masters Mud Ball Frustration

Jordan Spieth’s performance at this year’s Masters Tournament wasn’t solely defined by his play on the course; his comments regarding challenging conditions also garnered attention.

During a post-round interview, the 31-year-old golfer revealed he struggled with “mud balls” – clumps of embedded clay – during his second and third rounds at Augusta National. He noted a peculiar restriction: discussing these issues publicly seemed unwelcome by tournament organizers.

“My iron play killed me the last two days, and to be brutally honest with you, it was primarily mud balls,” Spieth stated. “It’s just so frustrating because you can’t talk about them here. You’re not supposed to talk about them.”

These imperfections significantly impacted gameplay, particularly on holes 11 and 13. Spieth experienced varied results on these challenging holes: a birdie on the 11th in the first round followed by par across subsequent rounds. Meanwhile, he recorded bogeys on the 13th during the initial two rounds, but recovered with birdies in both the third and fourth.

The presence of mud balls adds an extra layer of difficulty to Augusta National’s already demanding layout. Even a favorable lie becomes precarious when encountering these obstructions.

“There were less than normal today, but I still had them on those holes,” Spieth explained. “It’s something to pay attention to for sure for leader groups, because you just have to play so far away from trouble or lay up when you’d normally go for it… And if you’re on the wrong side of the hole, you’re either in the water or almost can’t make par depending on what hole it is.”

He further elaborated: “Look, it’s mowed into the grain. The ball is digging in on every shot. A lot of times you have it on 75% of your drives.”

Augusta National did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Despite these challenges, Spieth concluded his 12th Masters appearance tied for 14th place at 3-under par. He narrowly made the cut after a shaky start – finishing two-over-par through the first two rounds – but rebounded with a strong weekend performance of five-under.

The tournament was ultimately won by Rory McIlroy, who secured victory and completed the grand slam following a playoff triumph over Justin Rose.

  • Spieth finished tied for 14th at 3-under par
  • McIlroy won with a playoff victory over Rose.
