Iraola angered by incident

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola fumes at 'very serious' incident in draw with Manchester United Sports

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the sending-off of Evanilson during Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United.

The match saw Bournemouth take an early lead, courtesy of Antoine Semenyo’s powerful, low shot past Andre Onana in the 23rd minute. However, the game took a significant turn after Evanilson received a red card, ultimately allowing United to equalize through Rasmus Hojlund.

Iraola contends that the dismissal was unjust, asserting that Evanilson appeared to have slipped during a challenge on Noussair Mazraoui and insisted that a degree of common sense should have been applied. He voiced his frustration to Sky Sports:

“Common sense. Everyone who has played football understands. He slips; he doesn’t make contact with a high leg, and the consequence is a red card. It’s another three games without playing – the repercussions for us are considerable.”

He confirmed Bournemouth intends to appeal the decision, reiterating that it was simply an application of basic fairness.

Iraola also highlighted a previous incident in the first half where Evanilson received a kick to the chest from Casemiro, questioning whether such contact warranted a red card. He further criticized VAR’s perspective, suggesting the replay presented a skewed angle.

“If you’re telling me that VAR didn’t identify the slip, then that is something very serious,” Iraola stated. “It is difficult for us. We are in a worse position than we were at the start of the weekend, but we still have four games to play – challenging games, but we’re still in the fight.”

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, however, praised his team’s resilience and determination in securing a point.

  • “I think [we deserved it]. In the first half, we faced their intense pressing, yet created chances.”
  • “We had similar opportunities near the goal with numerous shots. I believe at least one point was warranted considering the game’s flow.”
  • “Looking back on our recent matches, we often inadvertently assist opponents in gaining an advantage, making it difficult to score goals. But the players performed admirably to earn a point.”
  • “We possess the ability to challenge our rivals. There are minor improvements we can make and better understand these moments.”

Amorim also commented on Rasmus Hojlund ending his goal drought, suggesting he seemed slightly more relaxed during the week.

“I won’t say [he is] relaxed, but he could be a little bit lighter during the week. He now needs to score many more,” Amorim added.
