Postecoglou criticizes Spurs errors

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a disappointing defeat at Molineux on Sunday, falling to Wolverhampton Wanderers with a scoreline of 4-2 in an exciting Premier League encounter.

The home side dominated the first half, establishing a commanding 2-0 lead by halftime. Rayan Ait-Nouri opened the scoring early, followed by an own goal from Djed Spence. Tottenham attempted a comeback after Mathys Tel’s goal in the 59th minute, but Jorgen Strand Larsen quickly restored Wolves’ advantage. Richarlison managed to pull one back for Spurs, creating a tense atmosphere, however, Matheus Cunha secured the victory for Wolves with another well-placed finish.

The loss leaves Tottenham languishing in 15th place with only six matches remaining in the season. This setback adds pressure on manager Ange Postecoglou, whose position is reportedly under scrutiny. Sources indicate that Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner is being considered as a potential replacement if Postecoglou departs.

If Glasner were to leave Selhurst Park, Crystal Palace would then pursue Ipswich Town’s promising manager, Kieran McKenna.

Postecoglou expressed his frustration following the match, attributing the defeat to individual errors.

“I thought we were well in control of the game, but we kept conceding really poor goals,” he stated. “It was a bit different today; these weren’t lapses, they were just unusual individual mistakes. We got punished and it makes achieving a positive result incredibly difficult.”

Tottenham now turn their attention to Thursday’s crucial second leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash against AZ Alkmaar. Postecoglou dismissed suggestions that the upcoming fixture had affected his players’ focus.

  • “I don’t think so,” he affirmed.
  • “It happens, it might happen once in a game or a season, and for us it happened multiple times today.”

He emphasized the importance of mental recovery ahead of Thursday’s match.

“The game Thursday is massive for us. We played well against them on Thursday night and probably should have secured a win then. When we play our football like that, we can certainly make an impact. So, we just recover today, physically and mentally, ensuring the players are in a good space.”

The manager also explained his decision to rest some players for the upcoming match, believing it will benefit them on Thursday.

For Wolves, this victory narrows the gap between them and Tottenham to just two points. More importantly, they maintain a comfortable 14-point cushion above Ipswich Town in the relegation zone, solidifying their position within the league.
