Perry and Sanchez Spice Space

Katy Perry offered a glimpse of the specialized attire her team will wear for their historic journey aboard Blue Origin’s upcoming flight on Monday. The ensemble, shared via Instagram, features Perry alongside Lauren Sanchez, Gayle King, and several other remarkable women participating in the mission.

Perry’s post, accompanying a group photograph, celebrated International Day of Human Space Flight, reflecting her profound appreciation for the cosmos. The caption read, “Happy International Day of Human Space Flight. Forever in awe of the Universe and its alignment.”

The image showcases Perry, Sanchez, King, scientists Amanda Nguyen and Aisha Bowe, and film producer Kerianne Flynn, each clad in a sophisticated dark blue jumpsuit. These outfits are marked with distinctive emblems: the NASA insignia, personalized patches bearing each participant’s name, and the Blue Origin logo.

Sanchez provided additional behind-the-scenes footage, capturing the team’s enthusiastic reactions as they encountered their suits alongside Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos. The video also highlighted specific design elements of the suit, including flared pant legs featuring a subtle white feather motif incorporated into the Blue Origin logo.

In one clip, Sanchez demonstrated the comfort of the suit, remarking after stretching in it, “Well, they’re comfortable. OK, that’s for sure!” She also shared footage documenting the women’s posed group photo.

According to an interview with *The New York Times*, Sanchez played a pivotal role in redesigning these space suits. She noted that traditionally, suits are “made for a man” and then adapted for female wearers. To achieve a more tailored fit and aesthetic, she collaborated with Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, the creative minds behind Monse and co-creative directors of Oscar de la Renta.

“I think the suits are elegant, but they also bring a little spice to space,” Sanchez commented.

She relayed a comment from Perry: “We’re putting the ‘a–’ in astronaut.”

Perry initially made this playful remark during an interview with *Elle* earlier this month, expressing her vision for bringing style and sophistication to space travel. “Space is going to finally be glam,” she stated.

The NS-31 mission, scheduled for April 14th, will carry Perry, Sanchez, and their team on an eleven-minute journey reaching a height of approximately 62 miles above the Earth’s surface – just beyond the Karman Line, generally considered the boundary of space. While they won’t achieve orbit, this marks a significant moment as it will be the first all-female crew to launch into space since Valentina Tereshkova’s historic solo flight in 1963.
