A tragic accident near Naples has claimed the lives of four tourists following a catastrophic fall of a cable car cabin. The incident occurred on Mount Faito, leaving authorities and local communities deeply saddened.
One individual sustained severe injuries as a result of the crash and was swiftly transported to a hospital via helicopter for urgent medical care.
According to regional president Vincenzo De Luca, all those who perished were visitors enjoying the scenic landscape. Initial reports suggested that the cable car system had malfunctioned, leading to the sudden halt of several cabins.
Rescue efforts are currently hampered by challenging weather conditions. As stated by officials, dense fog, strong winds, and heavy rain are significantly impacting operations.
- Difficult Terrain: The accident took place at a considerable altitude, further complicating rescue attempts.
The Mayor of Castellammare di Stabia revealed that the primary cable supporting the system had failed. He explained:
“The emergency brake positioned lower down the line functioned as intended, but unfortunately it did not engage on the cabin descending toward the summit.”
The investigation into the precise cause of this devastating event is ongoing.
