Ukrainian deaths in Palm Sunday missile attack

A devastating missile attack has struck the Ukrainian city of Sumy, claiming the lives of over 20 people as they observed Palm Sunday celebrations.

According to officials, two Russian ballistic missiles impacted Sumy around 10:15 a.m., leaving behind scenes of widespread destruction. Photos emerging from the area reveal buildings reduced to debris, vehicles engulfed in flames, and numerous casualties scattered across the streets.

“This bright Palm Sunday has been marred by an unimaginable tragedy for our community,” stated Acting Mayor Artem Kobzar in a social media post. “We deeply mourn the loss of over 20 lives.”

Initial investigations conducted by the Prosecutor General’s Office indicate that at least 21 individuals perished as a result of the attack. The Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that 83 others sustained injuries, including seven children.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed ongoing rescue operations following the missile strikes, which targeted residential buildings, schools and vehicles in Sumy. He condemned the actions with stark language:

“Dozens of civilians have been killed and wounded. Only despicable individuals would target innocent lives in this manner.”

Zelenskyy implored nations globally – particularly the U.S. and Europe – to take a resolute stance against Russia, emphasizing that diplomatic dialogue alone has proven insufficient.

“Negotiations haven’t stopped ballistic missiles or aerial bombs. What is required now is an approach towards Russia fitting for a terrorist organization.”

The attack occurred shortly after both Russian and Ukrainian diplomats accused each other of breaching a recently established agreement, facilitated by the U.S., to temporarily suspend attacks on energy infrastructure.
