Sam Menzin, formerly an assistant general manager with the Detroit Tigers, recently stepped down from his position. New information suggests this departure may be linked to allegations of inappropriate behavior.
According to a report by The Athletic, Menzin resigned proactively before the team could initiate termination proceedings following accusations that he sent unsolicited images of himself to former female employees via Snapchat. These messages, reportedly dating back to 2017, were automatically deleted through the app’s features.
While the Tigers initially declined to publicly specify the reason for Menzin’s resignation, they issued a formal statement addressing the situation:
“Upon being made aware of the allegations as to Sam Menzin’s conduct, the club promptly completed an investigation. Before the club could terminate Mr. Menzin, he resigned. This type of behavior is contrary to our standards and has absolutely no place within our organization. We have a positive and safe culture for our colleagues and will continue to emphasize respect, inclusion, and professionalism.”
The allegations extend beyond just Tigers employees. Another woman affiliated with Major League Baseball (but not the Tigers) also reported receiving similar unsolicited messages from Menzin on Snapchat between 2018 and 2019.
One of the women who came forward expressed frustration about the delay in speaking out:
“It’s like no one says anything because who is going to believe them when they say Sam Menzin did this? It’s not like a bat boy or security guard. It’s Sam Menzin.”
She further explained that the limited number of women in leadership roles within the Tigers’ front office created an environment where reporting such incidents felt improbable.
Menzin had been with the organization for 13 years, beginning his career as a baseball operations intern in 2012. He steadily advanced through various positions to reach a significant executive role. Prior to joining the Tigers, he also completed internships with both the New York Mets and Turner-Gary Sports.
As of now, Mr. Menzin has not responded publicly to these allegations.
Here’s a timeline highlighting Menzin’s career progression:
- 2012: Baseball operations intern with the Tigers
- Various roles within the Tigers organization over the following years
- Internships with the New York Mets and Turner-Gary Sports
- Reached assistant general manager position
