Manchester bombing suspect’s brother investigated

The Ministry of Justice has initiated a thorough investigation following a brutal assault on prison employees at HMP Frankland, perpetrated by Hashem Abedi, the brother of the Manchester Arena bomber.

Early Saturday morning, Abedi instigated an unexpected and violent attack against correctional staff, resulting in serious injuries including severe burns, scalds, and stab wounds. According to accounts from the Prison Officers Association, the assault involved the use of hot cooking oil followed by attacks with self-crafted weapons.

Two officers remain hospitalized but are currently listed as stable.

A statement released by the Ministry of Justice on Sunday expressed concern for the injured staff and confirmed a comprehensive review to determine how this incident occurred, operating in conjunction with an ongoing police investigation. The government has affirmed its commitment to safeguarding prison personnel.

“Our thoughts remain with the two prison officers still in hospital as they recover.”

Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned the attack as “appalling,” praising the three targeted officers for their bravery. She stated that she would advocate for the maximum possible penalties for Abedi’s actions, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards violence against correctional staff.

  • The assault resulted in life-threatening injuries including burns and stab wounds.
  • Two prison guards are currently hospitalized.
  • A full review is underway to understand how the attack took place.

Mahmood further stated, “I am appalled by the attack of three brave officers at HMP Frankland today. My thoughts are with them and their families.”

Further updates will be provided as they become available.
