A tragic incident unfolded Saturday afternoon in Evans, Georgia, resulting in the death of one Columbia County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) deputy and leaving another critically injured following a shooting during a traffic stop.
According to CCSO Major Steve Morris, two deputies were struck by gunfire. While their names have not yet been released, officials confirmed that one succumbed to his injuries. The other officer is currently receiving medical care and remains in critical condition.
The suspect has been identified as James Blake Montgomery. Authorities believe he was initially located near Mile Marker 194 on Belair Road in a camper. Morris indicated that Montgomery is no longer considered a threat to the public.
The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) is actively assisting with road closures and providing support at the scene. Aerial surveillance, involving helicopters and drones, was utilized in the search efforts. Police radio communications directed officers to photograph the suspect within the camper, and law enforcement focused their attention on the Arrowood Mobile Home Community off Wrightsboro Road.
Court records reveal that Montgomery faced a felony aggravated assault charge in December 2022; however, he was subsequently found not guilty.
The incident has deeply impacted the community surrounding Evans, located approximately ten miles northwest of Augusta, home to the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club and the annual Masters Tournament.
“Heartbroken and praying for the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and our neighbors in Columbia County,” stated Augusta Mayor Garnett Johnson on Facebook. “Our prayers are with the families of the fallen, the entire Sheriff’s Office, and all who are grieving this unimaginable loss. We honor their sacrifice and pray for the difficult days ahead.”
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr expressed his concern and ongoing monitoring of the condition of the wounded deputy via social media.
“Anyone willing to put on the uniform every day in a job that’s not safe, with somebody waiting for them to come home at the end of the shift, deserves our unwavering support & continued appreciation,” Carr posted. “We join in praying for the family of this fallen Deputy, his fellow officer, & all who served with him.”
Governor Brian Kemp also issued a statement conveying his prayers and acknowledging the profound sacrifice made by law enforcement.
“Marty, the girls, and I are praying for the loved ones and colleagues of the Columbia County sheriffs deputy that has fallen in the line of duty, as well as his fellow law enforcement officer injured tonight while protecting his fellow Georgians,” Kemp wrote. “As they remain in our hearts and prayers, we’re also painfully reminded of why those who wear a badge have more than earned our enduring respect and appreciation.”
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has not yet responded to requests for comment.
The CCSO is currently leading the investigation with assistance from the Georgia State Patrol.
