A Chicago man now faces murder charges following a devastating fire that claimed the life of veteran Chicago Fire Department (CFD) Capt. David Meyer earlier this week.
According to Patrick Cleary, president of Chicago Fire Union Local 2, evidence strongly suggests that Charles Green, age 44, was responsible for igniting the blaze. “It was pretty evident,” Cleary stated in an interview with FOX 32 Chicago.
Chicago Fire Captain Loses Life During Rescue Operation
The fire erupted shortly after 4:00 a.m. Wednesday at a garage location. CFD Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt reported that while firefighters successfully extinguished the initial flames, the structure subsequently collapsed during post-fire operations – a process known as salvage and overhaul.
- Incident Timeline:
- Approximately 4:00 a.m.: Garage fire reported.
- Firefighters extinguish flames.
- Shortly before 4:20 a.m.: A mayday alarm is sounded.
- Capt. Meyer, 54, transported to a hospital.
A critical “mayday” call was issued just prior to 4:20 a.m., and despite swift efforts, Capt. Meyer succumbed to his injuries later that day.
Commissioner Nance-Holt confirmed that Captain Meyer is survived by his parents, wife, three daughters, and one son.
Meyer dedicated 28 years of his life to the Chicago Fire Department. He was a respected member of Truck 29 on the west side and previously held the rank of lieutenant at Truck 35.
In a remarkable display of support, the University of Iowa Police Department facilitated the swift return home of one of Capt. Meyer’s daughters who is attending college in Iowa.
