Britons can save thousands on electric car chargers

As more Britons transition to electric vehicles, the demand for convenient home and workplace charging solutions continues to rise.

Fortunately, drivers can still significantly reduce the cost of installing an EV charger thanks to a variety of available grants and offers—though it’s important to note that some programs have deadlines approaching. According to data from Zapmap, approximately one million residential properties across the UK already feature home charging stations.

Here’s a breakdown of current opportunities:

Home Charging Grants

  • Renters & Flat Owners: A grant of up to £350 is available for those who own or rent flats with private, off-street parking.
  • On-Street Parking Solutions: Households without driveways can also qualify for a £350 grant if they install a cross-pavement charging solution (like a charging gully) and have only on-street parking available. Eligibility requires ownership or tenancy of the property.

Workplace Charging Scheme

Businesses, charities, and public sector organizations can leverage the Workplace Charging Scheme to receive up to £350 per charging socket installed, with a maximum application limit of 40 sockets across multiple locations.

Landlord Grants

  • A substantial grant of up to £350 is available per chargepoint socket for landlords.
  • Annual applications allow for up to 200 grants for residential properties (flats and houses) and 100 for commercial buildings (offices).

Small & Medium-Sized Business Grants

Businesses with fewer than 250 employees can access grants of up to £15,000 per site to cover the installation of chargers, related infrastructure preparation, and site readiness.

GOV.UK outlines potential grant amounts of up to £30,000 per property for residential installations.

Key Dates & Ongoing Programs

The Workplace Charging Scheme and the EV infrastructure grant for staff and fleets remain open for applications until March 21, 2026. This provides a window of opportunity for businesses to invest in charging infrastructure.

Special Opportunities: Education Establishments

State-funded schools and educational institutions are eligible for significantly larger grants—up to £2,500 per chargepoint socket. These organizations can apply for funding for up to 40 sockets across their various sites.

“The ongoing availability of these grants demonstrates a commitment to supporting the transition to electric vehicles and ensuring accessibility for drivers nationwide.”
