A former boxer is attempting to have his prison sentence lessened following a violent attack on a soccer referee during a match last year.
Adam Abdallah, 27, was convicted after the April 2023 incident at a Padstow game in Sydney’s southwest. Witnesses reported a heated argument escalating into a physical assault when Abdallah unleashed a barrage of kicks and punches upon match official Khodr Yaghi.
The attack left Yaghi with severe injuries, including two jaw fractures, the loss of four teeth, and nerve damage resulting in paralysis of his lip, significantly impacting his ability to eat and communicate.
Abdallah previously admitted to reckless grievous bodily harm at Sydney’s Downing Centre District Court in February, receiving a sentence of at least one year and two months with a maximum term extending to two years and three months, set to expire on April 24, 2027.
Now, he is appealing that decision. His solicitor, Boushra Elkheir, recently addressed the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal, stating her client hopes for an intensive corrections order; a system which would allow him to serve his sentence within the community rather than in custody. Elkheir emphasized the urgency of the matter due to Abdallah’s impending non-parole period expiring in March and requested an expedited hearing. A provisional date of May 23 has been scheduled.
According to accounts, tensions rose between Abdallah and Yaghi prior to the physical altercation, culminating when Yaghi reportedly struck the boxer with a 40cm flagpole. Despite initial attempts by friends to restrain him, Abdallah then repeatedly attacked Yaghi while he was on the ground.
Video footage captured the aftermath of the assault, showing Yaghi visibly injured, covered in blood, and appearing distressed. As onlookers attempted to assist him, Yaghi stated, “He broke my jaw.”
In a statement submitted to the District Court, Abdallah expressed remorse for his actions:
> “My actions on that day were excessive and inexcusable. I just wish I could take it all back.”
The court will now consider Abdallah’s appeal and whether an intensive corrections order would be appropriate given the severity of Yaghi’s injuries and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
