One year after a devastating attack at Westfield Bondi Junction, the security guard who bravely attempted to intervene remains deeply affected by the trauma he experienced.
Muhammad Taha, 30, was working alongside his friend and colleague, Feraz Tahir, when they were confronted by Joel Cauchi, a 40-year-old man wielding a knife. The attack on April 13, 2024 resulted in six injuries and ten more individuals requiring medical attention.
Taha shared that both his physical wounds and the resulting psychological impact persist, particularly as the anniversary of the tragedy approaches. “Still having some physical pain and the mental trauma is very big,” he stated.
The situation tragically claimed the life of Tahir, who was killed while Taha fought to protect him. Waking up in a hospital bed two days later to learn of his friend’s death was, as Taha described it, “the worst part.”
In recognition of his heroic actions, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese granted Taha permanent residency. He expressed profound gratitude for the honor, stating, “I try to help people of my country which I call home now, so it’s a great honour for me to be a part of this community.”
However, Taha finds himself unable to return to the Westfield Bondi Junction site. He primarily remains at home.
“I’m still not able to go near to that place,” he admitted.
The grief extends beyond Taha; Tahir’s brothers, Sheraz and Muzafar, are also grappling with immense sorrow.
- “I don’t think so it will go away, we can hide it but you know it’s in our hearts,” said Muzafar.
- “His bravery…he was very brave from childhood…and he showed at the end that he’s brave,” added Sheraz.
Inspired by his brother’s courage, Sheraz has embarked on a career in security.
While some survivors plan to return to Westfield Bondi Junction tomorrow to participate in a memorial event alongside NSW Premier Chris Minns and other officials – laying flowers as a tribute to those affected – Taha’s journey of healing continues.
“It’s important to remember the lives lost and acknowledge the resilience of this community,” stated Premier Minns.
