Blair Declares MS Relapse-Free

Selma Blair says she's 'truly relapse-free' after 7-year battle with MS Health

Actress Selma Blair has offered a hopeful update on her journey with multiple sclerosis (MS), sharing that she is experiencing a period of genuine remission.

The 52-year-old, who publicly disclosed her MS diagnosis in 2018, revealed to People magazine that she’s been feeling “amazingly well” for roughly a year and is now “truly relapse-free” from the debilitating symptoms of this chronic autoimmune condition.

“I’ve been feeling great,” Blair shared. “But I am finally well enough to really, genuinely… getting out and going out isn’t so scary anymore.” She expressed a newfound energy and stamina that allows her to envision a brighter future.

This improved health has sparked a period of introspection for the actress, prompting her to re-evaluate her aspirations. As she put it, “It’s funny. I haven’t spent enough time having dreams. And now it’s like, ‘What are my dreams?’”

Blair reflected on how the challenges posed by MS had previously consumed much of her energy and focus: “I think maybe since the diagnosis… you’re just tired all the time. I spent so much of my life so tired from being unwell that I think I was just trying to get through the day.”

Her current ambitions are increasingly career-focused, with Blair eager to return to acting and several projects already in development. Variety reported earlier this year on her planned comeback in three films:

  • “Stay Forte,” an Israel-Hamas war drama
  • “Silent,” a supernatural thriller
  • “There There,” a drama helmed by the Polish twins, Michael and Mark

Beyond acting, Blair – author of the 2022 memoir “Mean Baby” – also intends to write a young adult fantasy novel.

Since going public with her diagnosis, Blair has consistently used her platform to raise awareness about MS and offer support to those living with chronic illnesses. She emphasized the importance of continued advocacy: “I will continue advocating for people with chronic illness and getting better and what that looks like when you haven’t made your wishes. How do we give ourselves a new life force?”

In an emotional Instagram post in August 2018, Blair initially shared her diagnosis, describing the challenges she faced: “I have #multiplesclerosis. I am in an exacerbation… I fall sometimes. I drop things. My memory is foggy. And my left side is asking for directions from a broken gps.” Despite these difficulties, she maintained a positive outlook, stating, “But we are doing it.”

Blair achieved remission in 2021 following stem cell transplantation treatment. Her experiences throughout the illness were documented in her 2021 documentary, “Introducing Selma Blair,” which offered an intimate portrayal of her struggle.
