A tragic outcome has emerged from the Leicester Crown Court, where a 15-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl have been found guilty of manslaughter in connection with the death of Bhim Kohli, an 80-year-old man. The verdict follows a six-week trial detailing the events leading to his demise.
The incident occurred on September 1, 2024, near Leicester. Mr. Kohli was walking his dog in Franklin Park, Braunstone Town when he was assaulted and subjected to racial abuse just yards from his home.
After extensive deliberations spanning six hours and forty-six minutes, the jury unanimously reached their decision. While the boy had initially been charged with murder, he was acquitted of that specific charge.
Both youths, whose identities are being protected due to their ages, appeared visibly upset as the verdicts were announced. Justice Turner adjourned sentencing until May 20th, allowing time for further consideration.
Mr. Kohli, a retired factory owner, succumbed to his injuries in hospital the day after the assault, which resulted in severe neck trauma confirmed by a post-mortem examination.
His family described him as “a loving husband, dad and grandad,” adding that he was also “a son, brother and uncle.” They shared fond memories of his devotion to his grandchildren and his active lifestyle.
- He cherished tending to his allotment, visiting it daily with pride.
- Walking the family dog, Rocky, in Franklin Park was a regular joy for him.
- Known for his humor and infectious laugh, he brought happiness to everyone around him.
“Bhim has always been a very hardworking man and even at the age of 80 he was still very active,” the family stated.
The family’s statement continued: “Our hearts have been completely broken. We are now pulling together as a family to try and support each other through the most difficult time imaginable and would ask for privacy while we do this.”
Prior to the attack, Mr. Kohli had already been scheduled for surgery due to pre-existing health concerns, further highlighting the devastating impact of the assault on his well-being.
