A devastating accident has claimed the lives of a college softball player and her coach, following a serious collision involving their team bus in Oregon. School officials and law enforcement confirmed the tragic event occurred over the weekend.
Freshman athlete Kiley Jones, 19, and head coach Jami Strinz, 46, perished on Friday night after the Umpqua Community College softball team’s bus was struck by another vehicle. The incident took place while the team was returning from a game in Coos Bay.
“We are profoundly saddened to report the loss of two valued members of our community,” stated UCC President Dr. Rachel Pokrandt. “Kiley Jones and Jami Strinz were tragically killed, and several other students and staff remain hospitalized in Eugene and Portland. Our hearts are heavy with grief, and we respectfully request privacy for the families during this incredibly difficult time.”
According to a report from the Oregon State Police, Coach Strinz was operating the team bus at approximately 9:56 p.m. when a Chevrolet Silverado driven by Johnathan James Dowdy entered their lane of travel, resulting in a devastating head-on impact.
“These individuals were integral parts of our campus – Kiley a standout athlete and Jami an exceptionally skilled and dedicated coach,” shared UCC representatives. “The entire college community is grappling with this profound loss, offering deep condolences to their families, teammates, and loved ones. We urge everyone to extend compassion and respect for the families’ need for privacy as they navigate this heartbreaking period.” Support services are available for all members of the Umpqua Community College family.
Kiley Jones was a key player, appearing in 28 games at first base. Coach Strinz held the distinction of being the inaugural head coach of the program, having secured that role during this current season. She is survived by her partner, Steve Williams, and their daughter, Sari, as detailed on the team’s official website.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek expressed her sorrow via X (formerly Twitter), stating, “My heart aches for the @umpquacc family reeling from this tragedy. Oregon is here for you in your grief and loss. You are in my prayers. Many thanks to @ORStatePolice and other emergency responders for their compassionate response.”
In light of the devastating circumstances, the Umpqua Community College softball team has postponed both scheduled games on Saturday, with a return to play slated for Friday.
