Burgum Swears in DJ Daniel as Honorary Park Police Officer

Following a remarkable journey that captured hearts nationwide, Daniel, the courageous teenager who earned honorary Secret Service status during a 2019 address by President Donald Trump, has taken another significant step in his ambitious quest.

The inspiring young man, a cancer survivor who previously received a standing ovation after being recognized by the former president, was recently sworn in as an honorary United States Park Police officer. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum presided over the ceremony on Sunday, helping Daniel fulfill his extraordinary goal of being acknowledged by 1,000 law enforcement agencies.

“DJ’s resilience in his battle against cancer has inspired the nation,” stated Burgum via X (formerly Twitter). “It was an honor to meet with him and his family today at @Interior!”

Daniel’s journey began with a devastating diagnosis of brain and spinal cancer in 2018, initially given a prognosis of just five months. Since then, he has undergone over thirteen surgeries and remains actively involved in a research study – a testament to his strength and determination.

“He’s beating the odds,” proudly stated his father, Theodis.

Following his Park Police swearing-in ceremony, Daniel had the opportunity to patrol the National Mall, demonstrating “the highest degree of honor, integrity, and service” during his duties. His earlier recognition by President Trump during a joint address to Congress in March 2019 brought him widespread attention.

Prior to this most recent distinction, Daniel visited the Secret Service Training Center on March 19, where he congratulated the graduating class alongside Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Secret Service Director Sean Curran. He also received a tour of the facility.

Daniel’s ambition extends beyond his personal battle; he is on a mission to visit as many law enforcement agencies as possible.

During his visit to the Secret Service Training Center, Daniel offered heartfelt advice to other children facing similar challenges:

“Have faith. Believe in God. Listen to your parents.”

As of March 29, Daniel has been formally recognized by an impressive 914 agencies. He holds records for both the most keys to the city received and the number of “proclamation days” declared in his honor.

The Daniels continue their nationwide journey, with plans to visit more law enforcement organizations across the country.
