Funding threatened

States warned federal funding is in jeopardy if illegal immigrants are collecting unemployment benefits Government

The federal government is warning states that provide unemployment assistance to individuals residing in the country without legal authorization they risk losing crucial federal funding. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer conveyed this message Friday in a formal communication sent to all state governors.

Chavez-DeRemer’s letter emphasized adherence to directives from President Donald Trump, aiming to guarantee that taxpayer resources are directed toward those legally entitled to receive them. She stated:

“Our nation’s unemployment benefits are exclusively for eligible workers. Qualification requires being capable and ready to work, actively seeking employment, and possessing the legal authorization to accept a position within the United States. These benefits are not intended as assistance for individuals who are in our country without proper documentation.”

To facilitate verification of applicant status, Chavez-DeRemer encouraged states to utilize SAVE – an online platform accessible to federal, state, and local agencies.

This action represents a continued effort by the Trump administration to restrict access to taxpayer-funded benefits for individuals residing in the U.S. without legal permission.

Similar measures are underway across other government departments. On Thursday, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced that the USDA is implementing policies to prevent Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or food stamps, from being distributed to undocumented immigrants. Rollins asserted:

“USDA’s nutrition programs are designed to support America’s most vulnerable citizens. Allowing those who have violated our immigration laws to receive these benefits is unacceptable.”

Furthermore, Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner previously indicated a shift in priorities within HUD, prioritizing assistance for American citizens over undocumented immigrants residing in government-supported housing.

“Currently, we are only serving one out of four Americans who require our support, and that situation must change,” Turner stated. “Our sole focus will be ensuring that hardworking American taxpayers see the benefits they deserve.”
