Following his historic achievement, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a message of congratulations to Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin after he eclipsed Wayne Gretzky’s longstanding record for most goals scored in NHL history.
Born in Moscow, Ovechkin began his professional hockey journey with Dynamo Moscow, playing there from 2001 until 2005. He subsequently transitioned to the National Hockey League and was drafted by the Capitals, where he has become a dominant force in the sport.
“I congratulate you on your outstanding record,” Putin stated through an official Kremlin announcement. “You have surpassed legendary masters in the number of goals scored in National Hockey League regular-season games.”
The Russian leader further emphasized the significance of Ovechkin’s accomplishment, noting that it represented “not only your personal success, but also a real celebration for fans in Russia and abroad.” He concluded his message with well wishes, adding, “I wish you health, good fortune (and) fighting spirit to conquer new heights in life and in sports.”
Ovechkin achieved the monumental feat by scoring goal number 895 during a powerplay opportunity against the New York Islanders.
Reflecting on the magnitude of the moment, Ovechkin stated after the game, “I’m probably gonna need a couple more days or maybe a couple weeks to realize what does it mean to be No. 1.” He continued with gratitude, expressing pride “for myself, for my family, for all my teammates that help me to reach that milestone and for all my coaches. It’s huge. It’s unbelievable. It’s an unbelievable moment, and I’m happy.”
The goal was scored against Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin and marked the 183rd different netminder Ovechkin has successfully outmaneuvered throughout his remarkable career.
