As Holy Week concludes, First Lady Melania Trump utilized the social media platform X to convey a message of goodwill for Good Friday. She also expressed her anticipation regarding the forthcoming White House Easter Egg Roll.
“May this Good Friday instill hope and faith within all Americans and our global companions,” she stated in a post. “And as families throughout the country come together to commemorate Easter, I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the dedicated team at the East Wing for their unwavering commitment to orchestrating the upcoming White House Easter Egg Roll.”
The event is being presented as a significant cultural undertaking. “This historic tradition, dating back to 1878, offers moments of joy, storytelling, and laughter for children across America,” she noted.
Here’s what you should know about this longstanding custom:
* It marks the 147th anniversary since its inception during the presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes.
* The tradition wasn’t always welcomed; records show that egg rolls were previously prohibited on Capitol grounds due to growing popularity and related landscaping issues.
* “I eagerly anticipate witnessing the radiant smiles of children as we celebrate this special day,” she added.
Historically, the planning of the Easter Egg Roll has been a responsibility entrusted to each First Lady, allowing them to infuse their personal preferences into the event’s design. Previous iterations have included designated areas for dancing and organized egg roll races.
The White House maintains that over one hundred children are selected annually through an online lottery system, which concluded on March 10th. Attendees receive a commemorative wooden egg as a keepsake of their participation.
The Easter Egg Roll will take place on Monday, April 21st, on the South Lawn of the White House.
