A prominent Conservative voice has suggested that a potential alliance or cooperative arrangement with Nigel Farage’s Reform UK may become necessary for Kemi Badenoch to prevent a Labour victory led by Sir Keir Starmer.
Lord Ben Houchen, the Tees Valley Mayor and a figure frequently mentioned in discussions about future Tory leadership contenders, acknowledged that next week’s local elections present significant challenges for his party. Despite this, he expressed optimism regarding Conservative performance in key mayoral races across Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, Greater Lincolnshire, and Hull & East Yorkshire, anticipating setbacks for Labour.
When questioned about the possibility of a “Unite the Right” strategy, Houchen stated: “Should the next general election result produce a combined parliamentary presence from both the Conservative Party and Reform UK that establishes a clear majority, discussions regarding a coalition or some form of agreement would inevitably arise.”
Houchen emphasized his focus on preventing a Labour government, referencing their actions over the past ten months. He further highlighted a shifting political landscape in Britain:
- “The realignment in British politics is undeniably occurring.”
- “The traditional ‘Red Wall’ – as we’ll see next week – will likely demonstrate substantial support for Reform UK.”
He warned that if this trend isn’t recognized by either the Conservative or Labour parties, it could signify a lasting influence for Reform. “There’s still three years to address this,” he added.
“If that doesn’t send a clear signal to the Labour Party, as well as the Tory Party, then Reform has a long-term future.”
A source within the Labour party swiftly responded to Houchen’s comments, asserting: “Ben Houchen is articulating what Kemi Badenoch only subtly suggests: the Conservatives and Reform will collaborate to obstruct Labour’s efforts to implement necessary change for this country.”
Speculation regarding a potential partnership between the Conservative Party and Reform UK has been circulating within Westminster.
