Man arrested after teen shot

A young man from Newcastle has tragically lost his life following a shooting incident at Bar Beach carpark.

Ekam Sahni, aged 18, succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained around 11:40 pm on Wednesday. Emergency responders were called to the scene but were unable to save him.

“The investigation is ongoing and we are working diligently to piece together what occurred,” a police spokesperson stated.

Authorities apprehended a 22-year-old man at Newcastle Police Station earlier today, approximately 11:20 am. While he is currently in custody, no formal charges have been filed.

Police believe the incident stemmed from an altercation between two groups of individuals at the beach car park. Witnesses reported that following the dispute, a white Volvo SUV arrived, and a person emerged wielding a rifle. It’s alleged this individual discharged several shots, resulting in Sahni’s death before speeding away.

The vehicle used in the shooting is believed to have been stolen. Shortly after the incident, police located the Volvo abandoned and completely destroyed by fire approximately 20 minutes from Bar Beach in Tingira Heights.
