Kimberley Coast Residents Brace

Western Australia’s Kimberley region faces a significant threat from Cyclone Errol, prompting urgent warnings for local communities.

The cyclone, currently classified as a Category 2 system, is anticipated to make landfall along the coast this afternoon, though weakening to a Category 1 upon impact between Broome and Kuri Bay.

Residents in several coastal areas are particularly vulnerable, with damaging wind gusts forecast for:

  • Beagle Bay
  • Derby
  • Cape Leveque
  • Cockatoo Island

While Broome itself is outside the immediate projected path, those in Beagle Bay should prepare for powerful winds as the cyclone gradually shifts southward. Gusts could potentially reach speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology’s latest report (6am AWST), Cyclone Errol is presently located 295 kilometers northwest of Broome and 305 kilometers west of Cockatoo Island. The storm is currently tracking southeast at a speed of 14 kilometers per hour.

“The system is expected to diminish below tropical cyclone strength as it traverses the western Kimberley Coast by this evening, most likely impacting Cape Leveque and Cockatoo Island,” stated the weather bureau.

In addition to strong winds, significant rainfall is anticipated today and continuing through Saturday morning.

“It’s crucial for residents to remain informed about Errol’s evolving track and potential impacts,” a spokesperson from emergency services advised.

Authorities are strongly encouraging everyone in the affected area to monitor official updates and take necessary precautions.
