Hasselbeck dies

Don Hasselbeck, a distinguished former NFL tight end and Super Bowl victor, has passed away at the age of 70 following a cardiac arrest at his residence. His son, Matt Hasselbeck, confirmed the news on Monday.

The loss is deeply felt by the family, as expressed through a heartfelt post by Matt Hasselbeck on X. “He was an extraordinary husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach, player, colleague, artist, mentor, and storyteller,” Matt wrote. “While his accomplishments – being named an All-American at Colorado and winning a Super Bowl with the Raiders – are noteworthy, we cherish most of all the leadership he provided for our family.”

He continued, “He helped establish a firm foundation for us. For 50 years, he was devoted to our mother, Betsy, and their marriage was built on faith. His prayer journals, filled with his precise handwriting in a spectrum of colors, contain prayers for each member of our family, demonstrating the depth of his care and concern.”

Don Hasselbeck began his NFL journey as a second-round draft pick by the New England Patriots in 1977. He spent six seasons with the Patriots before being traded to the Los Angeles Raiders in 1983.

His time with the Raiders proved pivotal, appearing in every playoff game during their triumphant Super Bowl run against the Washington Redskins.

Subsequently, Hasselbeck played a single season each with the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants before retiring from professional football.

Matt concluded his tribute with a poignant reflection, “There’s a 6’7” hole in our hearts. He will be missed by countless people. We are incredibly grateful he was our dad and eagerly await the day we are all together again in Heaven.”

The legacy of excellence extends through the Hasselbeck family; both Don’s sons, Matt and Tim, also achieved careers playing in the NFL.

Throughout his career, Don Hasselbeck amassed a total of 107 receptions for 1,542 yards and scored 18 touchdowns across 123 games.
