A heartfelt campaign has been launched to ensure that aging veterans can attend crucial commemorative events, spearheaded by Johnny Gallagher of the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans. Speaking on GB News, Gallagher initiated a fundraising drive aiming to amass £1 million, enabling these heroes to participate in celebrations like next month’s 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) and numerous other occasions throughout the year.
Gallagher emphasized the significance of this initiative during his conversation with Martin Daubney, stating that for many World War II veterans, the upcoming VE Day could represent their final opportunity to celebrate a pivotal moment in history.
VE Day marks the formal Allied acceptance of Germany’s unconditional surrender, concluding years of conflict. Gallagher stressed the urgency of providing transportation and accommodation for these individuals, ensuring they can participate in this landmark anniversary.
“These veterans, not just with VE Day, D-Day, Dutch Liberation Day, you’re talking about events throughout the year,” he stated. “These people are very lonely. These events keep them alive.”
The newly established “Our Heroes Fund,” created in partnership with 100-year-old Dorothea, seeks to alleviate concerns about veterans’ ability to attend these vital gatherings.
Gallagher personally contributed £20,000 of his own resources to launch the fund. His motivation stems from a desire not to rely solely on government support and a deep concern for the well-being of these individuals.
“It breaks my heart to think we’re not doing this anyway,” Gallagher admitted, visibly emotional. “So many are doing work for free. It doesn’t take into consideration them having to pay for their own hotels.”
While acknowledging the ambitious nature of the £1 million goal, Gallagher assured viewers that all funds raised would be directed towards the charity and its efforts.
“I know some will be sceptical,” he said. “It’s a big amount of money. I made sure it goes straight to the charity. It’s for our heroes in this great charity.”
The conversation prompted an outpouring of emotion from Martin Daubney, who lauded Gallagher’s efforts and declared that the nation must not allow its greatest generation to be forgotten.
“It’s amazing. It’s life changing and our greatest ever generation cannot become the forgotten generation,” Daubney stated. “Johnny Gallagher, you are a hero. This is making dreams come true.”
