BGT Fans Accuse Show of Being Scripted

Simon Cowell blasted as ITV BGT fans accuse show of being 'scripted' after audition dramatically paused: 'Set up!' Entertainment

A recent episode of Britain’s Got Talent sparked controversy and accusations of predictability after judge Simon Cowell abruptly halted an audition, prompting widespread criticism from viewers.

The Saturday broadcast featured a diverse range of acts, but it was Louise Hall’s performance that ignited the online backlash. The 29-year-old teacher entered the stage with high hopes, expressing her desire to win before launching into Jacob Banks’ “Something Beautiful.” However, her attempt was cut short just moments later when Cowell signaled for her to stop.

“Sorry, do you have a second song?” he inquired, creating an immediate hush in the room. Louise confirmed she did, and Cowell advised, “If this means a lot to you, I think you’ve got to stop overthinking it for a second and just let go.”

Undeterred, Louise responded with determination: “OK, I’ll fight in this one for you, Simon.”

Cowell then commented, “That was kind of like what I call a polite audition.” He further suggested, “I think for yourself, you should.” The music swiftly changed, and Louise launched into Jennifer Hudson’s powerful rendition of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.”

While judges Bruno Tonioli, Alesha Dixon, and Amanda Holden were visibly impressed by her vocal ability, Cowell remained hesitant until ultimately granting Louise a “yes,” allowing her to advance to the next round.

The abrupt shift in song choice, however, fueled accusations that the show’s format is increasingly manufactured. Numerous viewers took to social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to express their dissatisfaction:

  • “How b****y predictable #BGT.”
  • “Oh god the old 2nd song trick #bgt.”
  • “Bgt is more scripted than EastEnders and Coronation Street #bgt #britainsgottalent.”
  • “That old chestnut. A ‘second song’… come off it, Simon. #BGT.”
  • “Go on Simon. Stop her 3 seconds in for the 2nd song. It’s on my BGT bingo card. Thanks. #BGT #britainsgottalent.”

One user even questioned, “How many people knew Simon was gonna do that #BGT?” Another stated, “So set up its un f***ing believable, same s**** different year #britainsgottalent.”

Despite the criticisms, some viewers applauded Cowell’s intervention and Louise’s subsequent performance, with one writing, “Wow brought tears to my eyes, she well deserved with golden buzzer.” (sic)

Louise’s four “yes” votes secure her a place in the upcoming live shows.
