Bellinger Out of Yankees-Tigers Game

Yankees' Cody Bellinger misses Tigers game possibly due to food poisoning, manager says Sports

Cody Bellinger, a key outfielder for the New York Yankees, was absent from Tuesday’s matchup against the Detroit Tigers due to illness stemming from food poisoning.

According to manager Aaron Boone, Bellinger experienced severe discomfort after consuming chicken wings Monday evening, leading to an extended bout of sickness. Boone confirmed that no other players on the team are currently exhibiting similar symptoms.

“We’re hoping he’ll be feeling improved and potentially available later in the game,” Boone stated via the New York Post.

This marks Bellinger’s third absence from the lineup within the last five games. He previously sat out two contests against the Pittsburgh Pirates due to a persistent stiffness in his back. After returning Sunday, he played Monday’s game before succumbing to illness on Tuesday.

The Yankees brought Bellinger aboard this offseason through a trade with the Chicago Cubs as part of their efforts to fill the void left by Juan Soto’s departure and subsequent signing with the New York Mets.

In eight games thus far this season, Bellinger has maintained a .233 batting average, contributing one home run and six runs batted in while showcasing versatility across all three outfield positions.

Filling Bellinger’s spot in Tuesday’s starting lineup was center fielder Trent Grisham, who is enjoying a remarkable start to the season, boasting an impressive .423 average with three home runs and nine RBIs over nine games.

The Yankees entered Tuesday’s game carrying a 6-4 record and currently lead the American League East.

The pitching matchup featured Carlos Carrasco for the Yankees against Tarik Skubal, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner representing the Tigers.

  • Bellinger’s Season Stats: .233 average, 1 home run, 6 RBIs
  • Grisham’s Season Start: .423 average, 3 home runs, 9 RBIs

“Hopefully (he’s) feeling a little bit better now, and we’ll see if we can get him going, make him somehow available as the game goes.” – Aaron Boone
