Laura Adlington, a beloved contestant from *The Great British Bake Off*, is preparing to welcome her first child with her husband, Matt. The joyous announcement came on Sunday as the couple revealed they are expecting an “IVF miracle” in October, marking the culmination of a nine-year struggle with infertility.
At 36, Adlington shared the news via social media, accompanied by an image of a baby scan held tenderly by herself and Matt.
Her journey to motherhood has been far from straightforward. Previously advised that she would need to lose a significant amount of weight—14 stone—before conceiving naturally, Laura and Matt opted to explore In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) approximately eighteen months ago. They chose to keep their fertility treatments private during this time.
“After 9 years of infertility, we are very excited (and still a bit in shock) to be expecting our little IVF miracle in October,” she wrote on Instagram.
Recognizing the sensitivity surrounding such announcements, Laura was mindful of those also navigating fertility challenges. “I know announcements like this can be really painful, especially if you’re in the thick of waiting or grieving, so please feel free to mute or unfollow if you need to,” she stated.
Describing her experience as “a really long, and to be honest lonely road,” Adlington explained that she and Matt had reached a point where they were at peace with the possibility that starting a family might not happen for them. Their journey included setbacks, including an unsuccessful round and a cancelled treatment, before finally receiving confirmation of pregnancy a few months ago.
She shared:
“Unless you’ve gone through infertility and that heartache of really wanting it and it not happening… it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through.”
The couple deliberately avoided discussing their fertility treatments with family or sharing details publicly to minimize external pressure.
- They endured an unsuccessful IVF round.
- A subsequent round was cancelled.
- Finally, they received confirmation of pregnancy a few months ago.
Adlington gained widespread recognition in 2020 as a contestant on *The Great British Bake Off*, captivating judges and viewers with her baking skills. Although she reached the final, she didn’t secure the win, losing to Peter Sawkins, who became the youngest champion in the show’s history.
Laura expressed excitement about sharing more of their story soon. “We’re just really excited to share our news with you all. We honestly can’t believe our luck,” she concluded.
