Anne Robinson Addresses Countdown Feud

Anne Robinson, 80, sets record straight on feud with Countdown's Rachel Riley after Channel 4 exit Celebrity

Anne Robinson has finally addressed long-standing rumors concerning her relationship with former Countdown co-star Rachel Riley, confirming that she once instructed Riley to be quiet during filming.

The 80-year-old television personality, who departed the Channel 4 series after a single season in 2022, has downplayed the speculation of a significant falling out between them. In a recent interview with *The Telegraph*, Robinson dismissed the idea of a lasting rift while acknowledging periods of tension on set.

“It’s simply a narrative,” she stated. “Rachel was quite vocal during my contestant interviews, but once that was addressed, everything was fine.”

Robinson reportedly found Riley’s conversations with contestants disruptive while attempting to conduct the show’s segments. She emphasized her commitment to punctuality as a key factor in her professional longevity.

“I’m generally well-received because if I must be on set eight minutes before nine, you’ll find me there. That’s what has allowed me to endure,” she remarked.

Despite the acknowledged friction, Robinson previously praised Riley’s abilities, stating in a previous interview with *The Daily Mail*: “I wouldn’t necessarily choose Rachel Riley for vacation, but I genuinely admire her—she is remarkably skilled at what she does.”

Previously, Robinson expressed frustration regarding Riley and dictionary corner expert Susie Dent’s punctuality and presence on set, leading to a decision to temporarily disable their microphones during filming.

“It stemmed from my desire for quiet in the studio,” Robinson explained. “I value people being punctual and maintaining a calm atmosphere. We had to resolve those issues.”

An anonymous source previously indicated a sense of “tension” on the Countdown set between different age groups.

  • Rachel and Susie reportedly didn’t share an affinity with Anne’s style, creating an uncomfortable environment.

Riley has also spoken about Robinson, describing her as “not particularly warm.” While she initially suggested that the show’s atmosphere improved after Robinson’s departure, Riley later cautioned against believing tabloid reports of a full-blown feud.

Robinson revealed that her decision to leave Countdown after only one year was primarily due to a disagreement over salary. Despite receiving an offer for increased compensation, she declined to become a regular employee of Channel 4 and chose to resign from the role. She was subsequently replaced by Colin Murray.

Robinson also attributed her departure to the show’s demanding schedule, noting in *Saga Magazine* that it prevented her from spending time with her grandchildren. The lengthy commutes to Manchester, where the program is filmed, were particularly taxing.

In her conversation with *The Telegraph*, Robinson offered critical commentary on what she views as “woke culture” in Britain.

“I detest the woke extremists draining the life from this nation,” she asserted.

Robinson suggested that, were she still involved in comedy, she would find ways to circumvent current restrictions. She expressed concern about a perceived decline in humorous and insightful female voices on television: “Because if you’re genuinely funny—properly funny—you can often get away with a great deal. Though there aren’t many sharp, funny women on TV anymore.”
