Streeting on business tariff aid

The government is preparing to unveil additional assistance for businesses facing difficulties due to recent increases in US tariffs, according to Health Secretary Wes Streeting.

Speaking on GB News, Streeting emphasized the importance of avoiding a trade conflict, stating: “A trade war benefits no one, and even if we aren’t directly involved, we’ll feel the repercussions. That’s why the Prime Minister is pursuing a three-pronged strategy.”

These key objectives include:

* Mitigating the impact of existing US tariffs.
* Negotiating an economic partnership with the United States to further reduce trade obstacles.
* Diversifying trade relationships by lowering barriers with countries across Europe and globally, reinforcing Britain’s commitment to free and open trade.

He acknowledged that securing a comprehensive trade agreement with the US is a priority but stressed that it’s not the sole focus. “We aren’t exaggerating our prospects regarding a partnership with the United States, but we are working diligently with our American counterparts.” Streeting highlighted the UK’s ongoing efforts to reduce barriers with the European Union and actively engage in emerging markets worldwide.

Streeting stated: “Of course, America isn’t our only trading partner. We have the European Union, where we aim to eliminate trade restrictions. And beyond Europe, we want to ensure that the UK is involved in some of the world’s fastest-growing economies.”

He concluded by reiterating the government’s commitment to supporting British industry amidst current economic challenges. “This is a complicated global environment, there’s no doubt about it, and that’s why the Prime Minister’s actions—both internationally and domestically—are vital for safeguarding British jobs and bolstering our industries.”
