Rodgers eyes potential new team

Aaron Rodgers, still navigating free agency after a stint with the New York Jets, might find himself presented with an intriguing opportunity in the National Football League. The New Orleans Saints are facing potential instability at quarterback following reports of a concerning shoulder injury for veteran Derek Carr, potentially sidelining him for the upcoming season.

According to NFL Network, surgery could be necessary for Carr, casting doubt on his availability and creating a gap that Rodgers could potentially fill. This isn’t the first time injury has plagued Carr; he missed seven games last year due to a concussion and fractured hand.

As speculation mounts about Carr’s future, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio anticipates action from the Saints: “Expect to see a report, sooner [rather] than later, that the Saints have reached out.”

While Rodgers had previously been linked with other teams, those options are narrowing. The New York Giants recently signed Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, removing them as possibilities. The Pittsburgh Steelers were another contender, but Rodgers has yet to reveal his preferred destination. Despite continued interest from the Minnesota Vikings, they seem committed to developing rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

“New Orleans becomes another option for Rodgers,” Florio noted.

The Saints currently have Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener as their backup options should Carr be unable to play. Rattler had a chance to step in last season, but his performance proved underwhelming, going 0-6 in six starts.

“It’s worth noting that Carr has just one year left on his deal with the Saints before becoming a free agent in 2027.”

The Saints hold the ninth overall pick in this year’s draft and could potentially use it to secure their future quarterback, perhaps even trading up to do so. Their actions will be closely watched by teams across the league. Rodgers, age 41, brings considerable experience but comes off a disappointing season with the Jets, where he had a 6-12 record in 18 starts.

  • The Saints are facing a quarterback dilemma due to Carr’s potential injury.
  • New Orleans is now considered a viable option for Rodgers.
  • Other teams like the Giants and Steelers have either been eliminated or aren’t currently leading contenders.
  • The Saints hold a valuable draft pick that could influence their approach to addressing the quarterback position.
