Restaurant discounts for slim patrons

A unique dining experience has emerged at a restaurant in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where customers can earn discounts based on their ability to navigate a series of metal bars.

Chiang Mai Breakfast World has gained considerable attention after videos showcasing this unusual promotion went viral on Instagram.

The restaurant has installed a gate featuring five progressively wider openings, each linked to a corresponding discount percentage displayed via colorful signage. The smaller the space a customer can successfully pass through, the greater their savings.

  • Smallest space: 20% off
  • Next-smallest space: 15% off
  • Middle space: 10% off
  • Next-largest opening: 5% off
  • Largest gap: Full price

Videos depict both men and women attempting the challenge. One video shows a man struggling to fit through the 15% discount bar, prompting a humorous suggestion from an onlooker: “You need some butter.” His efforts prove unsuccessful, leading him to attempt the 10% opening where he becomes temporarily stuck before moving on to the 5% discount.

Another video captures a woman successfully squeezing through the 15% bar, reportedly even managing it twice.

The promotion has generated mixed reactions online. While some praised the restaurant’s ingenuity, others voiced concerns about potential body-shaming implications.

“That is sad. It’s fat shaming but really it should be health shaming, which drives up the cost of our medical insurance,” one Instagram user commented.

Conversely, some found humor in the concept.

“We need this across all places, travel…” another person wrote.

And one commenter playfully asked, “What if I don’t fit in the full price?”
