Following contentious remarks made by Kyren Wilson during the World Snooker Championship, Shaun Murphy has expressed profound confusion regarding the situation.
Wilson recently generated considerable debate with an assertion that Murphy had acted in a manner he deemed unprofessional prior to the Masters event in January. The reigning champion’s ambition to secure a second consecutive World Snooker title was immediately complicated by this development.
“Shaun is fully aware of what transpired,” Murphy stated. “It wasn’t connected to any shortcomings in his performance during that particular session at the Masters; he played exceptionally well. Essentially, it appears to be a matter of differing perspectives within the sport – an understanding of established protocols. There was a specific infraction observed just before the final frame, and frankly, nothing untoward occurred during the game itself. The issue stems from a private discussion we had concerning this incident.
“Yes, I spoke with Wilson and Taylor about it directly. I’ve been a significant supporter of Murphy’s career over recent years, particularly when he was based in Ireland and required a practice facility and equipment support. Consequently, I was genuinely disappointed by the circumstances surrounding this matter.
“Despite this, I want to unequivocally state that there is no animosity directed towards Shaun,” Wilson clarified. “I believe his reaction demonstrates poor judgment. He chose to raise this issue now, after months of silence. A more appropriate course of action would have been to address it directly with me.”
Murphy elaborated further on his bewilderment: “I was simply attending a barber shop and received a barrage of inquiries regarding the accusation. I remain entirely ignorant as to the basis of Wilson’s complaint. It’s frustrating that he hasn’t confronted me personally, opting instead to make a public statement leaving everyone in suspense. My professional reputation is paramount to me, and this accusation feels particularly hurtful.”
He continued, detailing specific events surrounding the Masters: “I remember filling my car with windshield washer fluid, taking it for a wash, and treating the team to Starbucks afterwards. I honestly don’t understand what Wilson is referring to. He didn’t bring it up during our dinner together; he was polite and friendly. If he intended to challenge me, he should have done so privately.”
“It seems his criticism is rooted in a long-standing resentment—perhaps stemming from being the first competitor from our region to achieve prominence,” Murphy added with a tone of disbelief. “Perhaps it’s simply jealousy.”
