Following the implementation of National Education Policy 2020 by the Maharashtra government, which mandated Hindi as an optional third language, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized a key distinction. He stated unequivocally that Marathi’s status is unwavering and represents a fundamental requirement for all residents of the state. However, he underscored that selecting supplemental languages to be studied remains entirely at the individual’s discretion – a matter of personal preference.
“Our commitment to Marathi is absolute,” the Chief Minister declared, “but we respect the right of every citizen to pursue further linguistic exploration.” He continued, “While Marathi proficiency is essential, the decision regarding additional language learning rests solely with the learner.” The government’s approach aims to balance regional identity with broader educational objectives, recognizing diverse individual interests.
