Liver Disease Sign Urged

Liver disease warning as Britons urged to watch for key sign that ‘can wake you up’ and ‘last minutes’ Health

The prevalence of liver disease is on the rise, largely attributed to contemporary eating habits, yet the illness often progresses silently until significant damage has occurred.

A recent advisory from General Practitioner Dr. Amir Khan highlighted a surprising potential warning sign: frequent nighttime leg cramps. He cautioned viewers to be aware of this symptom, explaining that it manifests as “painful, involuntary muscle contractions affecting the lower legs during sleep.”

“These spasms can be intensely painful, disrupting sleep and making it difficult to return to slumber,” he added.

While leg cramps become more common with age—a phenomenon Dr. Khan attributed to natural tendon shortening—they are also disproportionately experienced by women and frequently occur during pregnancy.

Though the precise cause remains elusive in most cases, clinical research has established a link between leg cramps and various underlying health concerns. Dr. Khan emphasized that factors such as prolonged periods of inactivity, standing on hard surfaces, inadequate posture, and pre-existing conditions affecting the heart, kidneys, or liver can all play a role.

Specifically, nocturnal leg cramps have been clinically linked to cirrhosis – the advanced stage of liver disease where the organ’s functionality significantly declines and nerve function is compromised. This connection suggests potential impairment in liver health.

Electrolyte balance, another critical aspect intertwined with liver function, may also contribute to these nighttime muscle spasms.

Disruptions in electrolyte levels can arise from kidney dysfunction; when kidneys are not functioning optimally, waste products accumulate within the bloodstream.

Dr. Khan stressed the importance of discussing this symptom with a healthcare professional who can conduct appropriate testing if necessary.

He further suggested preventative measures:

  • Regular stretching throughout the day
  • Adequate hydration
  • A well-rounded diet rich in B vitamins
  • Wearing supportive footwear

Should a leg cramp occur, Dr. Khan recommends “getting up and pressing your feet flat against the floor while performing stretches or massages – either manually or with a roller.” He concluded that gentle walking around the room can also provide relief.

“It’s important to listen to your body and seek professional guidance if you experience persistent or concerning symptoms,” he stated.
