Hoyle praises Stewart’s news delivery

Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle hails Alastair Stewart's 'unflappable delivery of news' in inspiring tribute as pair meet in House of Commons Media

The House of Commons Speaker has formally recognized the distinguished career of Alastair Stewart OBE, coinciding with the recent unveiling of a new studio bearing his name at GB News’ Westminster location.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle lauded Stewart’s remarkable ability to deliver news—a style characterized by its “unflappable delivery, in an instantly recognisable, authoritative, yet clear and determined voice”—and emphasized how it has served as an inspiration for “generations of young people aspiring to a career in journalism.”

This week, Alastair Stewart and his wife, Sally, met with Hoyle at the Speaker’s House within the grounds of the Houses of Parliament. This meeting followed Monday, March 31st’s dedication ceremony where Stewart officially opened the GB News Westminster Alastair Stewart OBE Studio.

Though unable to attend the opening due to scheduling conflicts, Hoyle conveyed his sentiments in a letter read during the event. He expressed his enthusiasm for the enduring recognition of Stewart’s accomplishments by GB News.

As stated in the letter: “I was very excited to hear that your brilliant career is being recognised in perpetuity by GB News.” Hoyle continued, noting not only the honor of having a studio named in Stewart’s honor at the QE2 Centre, but also how his presence and reputation will be inextricably linked with news coverage emanating from Westminster.

He further commented:

“I am sure many others are better able to refer to your illustrious career, but from my part, I have always admired your journalism, which I know has inspired generations of young people to take up the calling.”

Hoyle highlighted Stewart’s signature style, noting how his consistent and confident delivery—marked by a recognizable voice—instinctively signaled significant events to viewers.

  • Stewart’s hallmark was an unflappable presence.
  • His authoritative tone conveyed importance.
  • His clear delivery ensured understanding.

Concluding his message, Hoyle shared a personal note of appreciation:

“On a more personal note, I have always looked forward to our interactions and feel privileged to have been interviewed by you before you retired.”
