A memorable encounter occurred at the RBC Heritage tournament this week, adding a surprising twist to one golfer’s round.
The event marked the first competition following Rory McIlroy’s historic Masters victory, an achievement that completed his career grand slam. Despite the recent intensity of the Masters Tournament, numerous top players gathered at Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina.
Among them was Billy Horschel, who experienced an unexpected moment on the 10th hole. His tee shot veered off course, striking a spectator in the leg before ricocheting back towards the fairway. Unaware of the impact initially, Horschel was informed that he had inadvertently hit a fan.
Responding with grace and good humor, Horschel signed the woman’s leg and shared a warm embrace.
“It’s certainly not how you want to make contact on the course,” Horschel said later.
The incident occurred during a challenging day for Horschel, who finished with an even-par score and currently sits tied for 51st among a field of talented competitors.
Justin Thomas set the pace with an impressive 10-under 61, while Russell Henley and Scottie Scheffler, the victor of both the 2022 and 2024 Masters Tournaments, are close behind at three strokes back.
As one of the tournament’s five signature events, the RBC Heritage features no cut line, meaning Horschel still has an opportunity to improve his standing.
- Justin Thomas: 10-under 61
- Russell Henley: -7
- Scottie Scheffler: -7
