Gardeners must address overlooked plant protection

With warmer weather gracing the United Kingdom, gardeners should now focus on preparing their outdoor spaces for the summer season.

A leading horticultural expert recently shared crucial advice with GB News regarding essential preparations before planting begins. Among these recommendations was a strong emphasis on maintaining gardening tools to prevent potential problems.

Luke Dejahang, Director at Crown Pavilions and a seasoned gardening professional, suggested rearranging garden furniture as an initial step. He noted that shifting pieces of furniture allows areas underneath to dry out, stimulating grass growth.

“Relocating your garden furniture during the spring months is beneficial,” he explained. “It provides an opportunity for the soil beneath to rejuvenate.”

Dejahang also highlighted a frequently neglected task: tool maintenance. Neglecting this can lead to damage and other issues.

He recommends both sharpening and thoroughly cleaning all garden tools, stating that “well-maintained equipment is vital.”

  • Clean tools minimize the risk of disease transmission between plants.
  • Sharp blades ensure cleaner cuts, promoting healthier growth.

Following these preparatory steps, gardeners are encouraged to begin sowing flower seeds; spring offers optimal conditions.

“The soil is warming, and longer daylight hours create a supportive environment for seed germination and vigorous plant development,” Dejahang commented.

For beginners, he suggests starting with varieties like marigolds and lavender.

“Marigolds are excellent pest deterrents, flourishing in sunny locations with good drainage. Lavender provides delightful colour and fragrance – just be sure to water it sparingly as they prefer drier conditions. Pruning after flowering will encourage new growth.”

Dejahang emphasized that gardening is accessible regardless of experience level.

“The ideal starting point is gaining knowledge about the specific needs of your plants and understanding what they require to thrive.”

He recommends beginning with low-maintenance varieties such as snake or spider plants. New gardeners should pay close attention to watering practices, avoiding both overwatering and underwatering – common errors that can jeopardize plant health.

“When watering,” Dejahang advised, “use a gentle spray from a watering can or hose to protect delicate young plants.”
